The connector words AND and OR are important to use when you combine ideas. You may also
hear people refer to them as Boolean Operators. The following pages will show you how to successfully
search using these two terms. |

George Boole (1815 - 1864) was an English mathematician who helped establish the field of mathematics called symbolic logic. Boolean logic uses words called operators. The three main operators are: AND, OR and NOT.
Here are some examples:
AND is used to narrow your search:
college AND admissionsOR is used to expand your search:
college OR higher educationNOT is used to exclude certain words*: saturn NOT automobile
* beware of the NOT, sometimes you can unintentionally exclude great information. Use this only when absolutely necessary.
